If you ask me what a Business Analyst does, I would say...
Business Analysts are the communication bridge between technical and business teams. They work within software development, software implementation, and operational use of software platforms or environments. They oversee these projects by utilizing knowledge to guide decisions and deliver effective solutions.
Business Analysts are responsible for:
Communication: Communication to oversee projects, steer teams, and recommend solutions.
Leading: Ensuring timelines and goals are met.
Requirements Elicitation: Gathering requirements and problem-solving to translate requirements into solutions.
Creating Documents: Developing process flow diagrams, user stories, and mockups.
Analyzing Information: Analyze data to provide insights and identify solutions.
Facilitating Solutions: Developing project roadmaps and creating supporting resources.
Implementing Solutions: Overseeing system projects and implementations.
Testing: Facilitating testing and resolving issues during implementation.
Documenting Resources: Documenting current and future business processes, creating training materials, and delivering presentations.
But on a more detailed level…
My experience as a Business Analyst (BA) involves focusing on communication and improving development processes and operational efficiency within complex software projects. Acting as a bridge between the technical team and business stakeholders, I gather requirements, analyze requirements, create documentation, and implement solutions to address business challenges and deliver data-driven results.
Think of Business Analysts as interpreters, ensuring effective communication between technical teams and business leaders to achieve optimal outcomes. I engage in a series of structured steps across projects, with slight variations based on the context
Communication Goals and Actions
Gathering requirements, implementing solutions, and creating documents are essential parts of being a Business Analyst, but all actions ultimately serve one goal: effective communication. Effective communication is a two-way street. I facilitate open discussions and ensure clear, concise information flows between teams, fostering alignment and collaboration.
Goal: Communication with Business Team Leadership
Action: Elicitation, requirement gathering, facilitating meetings
Goal: Communication with the Technical Team
Action: Creating technical documentation, requirement analysis
Goal: Communication with End Users
Action: Creating training documents
Goal: Communication with System Under Analysis
Action: Solution implementation, system management
ElicitationBy asking targeted questions, interviewing stakeholders, researching processes, and observing workflows, I uncover project goals and clarify stakeholder needs, laying the groundwork for success.
Documenting Requirements
Clear and concise documentation of findings is critical. I thoughtfully organize and share this information, ensuring stakeholders and team members can easily understand and act upon it.
Analyzing Information
After gathering requirements, I assesses how to achieve the project’s objectives, leveraging data insights to define what the business needs to succeed.
Facilitating Solutions
Based on analysis, I identify potential solutions to business challenges, evaluate the options, and recommend the most effective approach.
Implementing Solutions
During implementation, I ensure the solution operates as intended, monitor its impact, and identify areas for improvement. At this stage, the BA may also take on project management responsibilities, keeping stakeholders informed and satisfied.
Testing
Post-implementation, I test the solution, develop training materials, and gather feedback to refine the project or guide future iterations.
Technical Skills
I am not highly technical but I have a basic understanding of the system under analysis, its capabilities, and limitations. While technical tasks are typically handled by technical admins, a Business Analyst with configuration skills can contribute even further, provided they have the time and expertise.
Business Analysts should be involved in projects from the beginning. Their role in understanding project needs and scope is crucial.
To excel in this role, I possess the following skills:
Needs Analysis: Identifying business requirements and challenges.
Eliciting Requirements: Asking the right questions to uncover necessary details.
Business Case Definition: Establishing the value of proposed solutions.
Requirements Writing & Review: Documenting and refining project requirements.
Flow and Process Diagramming: Visualizing workflows to simplify complex ideas.
Wireframing: Designing basic user interface mockups.
Business Data Analytics: Using data to inform decision-making.
Problem Solving: Addressing issues with innovative solutions.
While not needing advanced technical expertise, I have, or I will develop a foundational understanding of the systems I use with consideration of the following:
App additions
Automation
Collaboration tools
Data management
Reports and dashboards
CRM principles
Platform capabilities
As a Business Analyst, that has worked with software development projects, software implementation projects, and operational software environments, I bring a solution-oriented, action-oriented, and data-driven approach.
Solution-oriented: Developing optimal strategies to meet business goals.
Action-oriented: Proposing actionable recommendations.
Data-driven: Relying on insights to inform decisions.
